I obviously hate myself because I so desperately want an older Yamaha Exciter 270. Why have 1 difficult to maintain 2 stroke jet engine on a jet ski when you can have TWO difficult to maintain 2 stroke jet engines on a boat?!

Kinja'd!!!

If you remember months ago I was searching for a jet ski to buy. The wife wants the whole family to be able to be on board at all times (fair enough) so I of course has a solution to that problem. Hopefully going to see this either tomorrow night or friday night. Would love to have it in the water this weekend.

The 270 is exactly that btw - 2 70 horsepower. Capable of about 55-60 on the water depending on load/conditions. With their size, power and hull they are capable of doing full spins like a jet ski would at speed.

Besides the obvious fun factor above, it’s also short with a shallow draft. I am going to be taking it on a chain of lakes that my wife’s family has a house on. The lakes connect but have really low bridges that run across the connections, like 3.5/ 4 feet, and I’ve seen plenty of boats have to throw it in reverse and back out from under a walking bridge. I want to have full access to the lakes.

Excited about an Exciter over here . Here’s hoping the wife doesn’t get cold feet and drop a hard veto-bomb on me this week. Installing the trailer hitch tonight after the kids go to bed probably.

buddy use to have one of these. They are great fun and honestly spent less time in repair than the ski doo jet boat he replaced with it. In my opinion they both are a waste of cash though, they suck for fishing use. Which is why the Yamaha has since moved on and a Lund has taken over.

lol, I’m no fisherman. And sea-doos are definitely known to be in the shop. The early sea-doo boats were nuts because they didn’t even use the biggest engine they had laying around and they made those motors do a ton more work than they were designed for. I’ve been focusing hard on Yamaha trying to find something. The Exciter is nice because it has 2 bow seats, 2 normal seats and a bench across the back. Great seating for a jet boat.

I do know that the most important thing about owning a boat is knowing it will break and things will go wrong. that being said, a nother benefit of a twin engine boat is if you blow a motor you can still limp back to the dock.

I want to like jet boats.  but I just can’t.  That being said they are a lot of fun for blasting around in.

Friend of mine had one of the Sea-Doos. She made a sport of cutting hard turns at speed and tossing big burly guys out of the back.

put a jet in a jet boat (yo dawg)

(yes, I know it’s a turboshaft)

I always thought it was strange turboshafts don’t have their exhausts pointed in the direction of thrust, but I guess they don’t add a ton of thrust anyway so might as well not melt the back of the whatever at idle.

I definitely have the hesitation of “why am I choosing something that’s obviously harder to work on than a traditional I/O with (basically) a car motor in it?” Well, the bridge clearance is a huge issue. The only other “speed boat” I’ve seen make it through them all is one of these little guys:

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve seen the I/O’s do fine, in fact I rode in one on that lake on S aturday.

But It’s too small, not a fan of those.

I have a friend who bought one of these a few years back surprisingly cheap from another friend.

They don’t speak anymore.

HAHAHAHAHA, yeah those handles are there for a reason! I won’t be doing spins with my 5 year old in the boat that’s for sure. This also has about 100 horsepower more than the sea doos that could spin....

they add practically zero thrust. the power turbine is meant to soak up as much energy from the exhaust stream as possible.

that said, there are a few interesting ways to do a turboshaft. the Allison T63 in that video is a weird one; the compressor takes in air up front, sends it all the way to the back of the engine, where it reverses direction into the combustor and turbine, then exhausts upward from about the middle of the engine.

Kinja'd!!!

some of the earlier ones like the GE T58 were pretty similar to turbojets, except instead of just blasting the exhaust out a nozzle, they put in the low pressure turbine then exhausted out of an “elbow” which let the output shaft pass straight back

Kinja'd!!!

my favorite of the engines (Lycoming T55) is more or less a straight-through design like the T58, but instead of the output shaft poking out the back, instead it goes forward inside of the hollow main shaft and pokes out the front (intake) side of the engine.

If it’s surprisingly cheap - it needs a new motor (or two) and something else is probably broken as well. There’s a shockingly long list of things you do to these when you first buy one (been reviewing the Yamaha Jet Boat forum) to make them run a thousand times better. Every one of these things should have been done from the factory. Simple stuff like an air/fuel separator to keep the fuel flowing nice in hard turns. They have a tendency to pull air and force an air bubble into the motor causing blow outs. They also have a tendency to blow oil lines off of them causing a motor to blow. Upgraded oil lines are a basic necessity on them.

Also, I clearly research things way more than most people because I have all this info in my head now and I’ve never owned one.

Oh also, no props to worry about. With a 5 year old and a 1.5 year old that’ll be around this boat for a long time swimming, learning how to tube and maybe ski or wakeboard, it’ll be a nice piece of mind not having a spinning death wheel back there.

just be warned, you can’t have too much fun if those bow seats are filled! unless you don’t mind turning back to pluck them out of the water. If i were a rich man I’d love to have a jet boat as a toy and a fishing boat. Jet bo ats are endless fun. You can jump your own wake! just sucks for anything but fun..

There’s a ton of advantage.

There’s also a ton of things that will break.

BOAT LIFE I guess....

2 strokes are pretty simple machines at least if I have to rip a motor and rebuild over the winter I probably could.

Hahaha yep. We’d be going out in a group in most circumstances. Anyone who wants a smooth calm ride is welcome on one of the 2 pontoon boats that go out.

This would be part of a 4 boat fleet that involves 2 pontoons and 1 early 80s 5 seater/closed bow speed boat. I was originally leaning towards a jet ski because we’ve got room on the other boats, but the wife wants to be able to all load on 1 in case we all wanted to leave for the day or if we take it to a different lake without the group.

Oh man, if you have too man pontoons I’d give one a home. I’ve been eyeballing some older models lately. Stuff in good shape but maybe rough interiors. I want to basically gut one any ways and use it as a canal boat for fishing so I don’t care about how nice the seats are. I found a small marina on the canal near by that offers $60 a month docking while the canal is open vs like $300 a month for one on the big lake. I fish the canal mostly in mid/late summer anyways as the fishing moves too deep in the great lake. my two boat scenario that could actually happen is a pontoon on the canal and a small old fishing boat for touring. some day I’d like to throw a jet boat in the mix. but lets start with one junker fishing boat first haha I was going to buy this year but I want to buy a house next year so the money sits in my bank being al “you could have a boat... you dont have to buy a home” and I’m like stfu! I want to own a home..

my brother and brother in law spend a lot of this weekend tearing apart a pump on an old jetski, the weekend before they did the carbs.  Man...cone seal is the stinkiest stuff ever.

hahaha. Into the great lake? what lake are you on I forget (I’m in Metro Detroit). I’ve looked at the ‘toons a bit but they aren’t what I want - the wife would be happ ier though. We probably won’t have storage in the water either it’ll be trailered to and from so a Pontoon isn’t really functional if that’s the situation. I’d love to get a spot on the family dock, but I think they are full and not allowed to build out further. Also, jet’s don’t do great sitting in the water.

Ontario, I’m out Rochester way. So I want to put a pontoon in the Erie canal. then have a 16 or 18 foot aluminum V, like a lund or something, to jump the finger lakes, various other million lakes around NY  and take out into Ontario a bit.

There’s 2 types of boat in this world that matter:

Center Consoles, and Sportfishing Yachts.

If you want a nything else, you’re just confused..

Do it! Actually, telling anyone to buy a boat is terrible advice, but this would be an exceptionally fun way to move across water. When the Marine Corps had me where I couldn’t use the family boat for awhile, I picked up a twin engine SeaDoo Speedster on ebay about 500 miles away . It was tremendously fun, and it topped out around 50mph. While mine wasn’t in exceptional condition, it was serviceable and I got a lot of use out of it for the season I owned it. Did Lake Havasu (not my crowd) , did lots of time on the river below Havasu (much better) , took it to San Diego a couple times, got to know San Diego bay real well, took it out around P oint Loma and cruised up to Mission Bay, cruised into the point just before the surf was breaking at Pacific Beach to pick up a couple of friends who swam out from shore to meet me and do Mission Bay again for the rest of the afternoon . It was a blast, even it was a thir sty watercraft. There is a scenario where I’d own a small jet boat again. It was every bit as much fun as a jet ski, but it was so much more useful and capable.

neither of those would work on the lakes we plan to go to. Small in-land lakes with low bridges to transfer lakes. I mean like a 4 foot bridge clearance.
